SGA Safe Ride Van

Starting on Thursday 9/18, the new SGA Safe Ride Van will start for the academic year.

At this time, the shuttle will run only Thursdays-Saturdays from 10pm-2:30am. This excludes college break and extremely inclement weather.

If you are interested in become a driver, please contact the Fleet Office or Public Safety. If we can recruit more drivers, we will be able to run the service more during the week.

The shuttle will be on a loop system on campus. The van will arrive at its assigned stop every 30 minutes. The stops are:

1837/Mandelle Lot, waiting area at the lamp post near the blue light phone
Chapin Rd (for the Rockies & Mary Woolley Hall), waiting area at the PVTA bus stop
Gateway Rd (for Brigham & the Library), waiting area at the speed limit sign on right
Gateway Rd (for Psych & Ed Building), waiting area at the lamp post
Dunlap Place (for the Betty Shabazz Center), waiting area at the blue light phone
Equestrian Center Drive (for the Equ Ctr/Lot), waiting area at the blue light phone
Park St/Ham/McG Drive (for Ham/McGregor), waiting area at the lamp post on left
Lower Lake Rd (for the Art Museum area), waiting area at the PVTA bus stop

*The SGA Ride Van does not usually go into the Fleet Vehicle parking lot. However, drivers who are returning fleet vehicles between 10pm-2:30am, can be picked up in this lot by calling Public Safety dispatch, who will radio the van driver to go into this lot on the next circuit.

The Safe Ride Van is for safety purposed for MHC students traveling alone & has limited capacity. If you are going to your final destination in a group, please do not ask for a ride.

Big Y & Mall Shuttle

Do you want to go to the Holyoke Mall to shop? Or do you need to pick up some groceries?

Well, here is your change to head that way!

MHC offers a shuttle every Thursday and Friday during the academic year (excluding breaks). The bus leaves from Blanchard PVTA bus stop and heads to Big Y in town and then to the Holyoke Mall.

The schedule is:

7:30pm

Depart Holyoke Mall-
7:05pm
9:05pm

You will need to purchase a ticket to take advantage of this wonderful shuttle. The tickets are $1 and are available at the Blanchard Info Desk.

Community Service

The shuttle runs Monday-Friday, excluding breaks.

The shuttle ONLY goes to South Hadley & Holyoke locations.

Its September and you know what that means......you have to get all of your ducks in a row to be able to drive fleet vehicles for all of your school needs.

So, check with Student Programs regarding the vehicle authorization forms. The org fair is this week, so check with them when you can get your things all set to use the fleet vehicles!

Also, check out the list of fleet orientation classes on the right side to see when you can obtain your fleet "licence". If you want to sign up for one, please contact the fleet office!

Yeah! Another academic year is upon us. We are ready to assist you with any fleet matter (and of course if you have any other matters, we can help guide you with that too)!

If you are with a student org, please check with Student Programs to check in to see when the Student Org fair will be held for all of your paperwork needs.

Fleet Orientation classes will be set up VERY shortly and will be posted soon.

2008 Toyota Sienna's

We have two new vehicles in our fleet. They arrived a couple of weeks ago! They are two new brand new Toyota Sienna's (but white, not maroon like the picture below).

When you return to campus, they will waiting for you to use (under fleet rules & regs of course).

Attention Student Organizations

I know its early, but I've already received requests for fall reservations from many different student organizations and I need one piece of paper to make those reservations come true! You know, its not a fairy godmother or anything like that, its so much simpler then that.

What I need is a vehicle authorization form from Student Programs. Student Programs handles the paperwork since they are in-charge of all the stu orgs for the campus. They know all and when I receive that form from them, it is letting the Fleet Office know that your stu org is meeting their standards. That means all financial responsibilities are taken care of along with following the rules and regulations of stu orgs.

So, contact Student Programs to find out when you will be allowed to fill out the form. Usually at the beginning of the year they have a massive meeting with everyone representing their orgs and then the paperwork starts to flow to the Fleet Office. Then we can work on your reservations!

The Fleet Office hosted an employee bus trip to see the Red Sox play the Baltimore Oriels on Friday 7/11/2008. The night was a perfect summer evening for a baseball game. The weather was warm with a nice summer breeze flowing through the stadium.

The game was good, even though nothing too exciting happened. There was an almost home run where the ball bounced off the wall back into fair play and a couple of double plays. The Red Sox did end up losing 3-7, but it was nice to be out with my fellow employees for a night of baseball.

Even Summer Conferences Use Us!

Can you believe it? The summer conference season is in full swing around here. We have many different camps and conference here with us this summer that range from sport clinics to research for adults. Its amazing the groups of people we have around here (along with the normal brilliant employees and students we typically have).

But with all this hard work these conferences do to achieve their goals, they still need down time too. So, the summer groups still use the fleet programs from the sedans all the way up to the buses for field trips all over New England.

Here are some of the locations we have brought our talented visitors to: the Morse Hill Ropes Course, the New England Air Museum, Nomad's Indoor Adventure, day trips to Boston, DAR Beach and the mall. These are just a few locations where we take them for some much needed down time.

So, we are not just an academic department, we are here year round to assist in your field trip needs!

When you think you are above the law!

An off-duty police officer, familiar with radar guns,
drove through a school zone within the legal speed limit
when the flash of a camera went off, taking a picture of
his license plate.

The officer, thinking the radar was in error, drove by again;
even more slowly.  Another flash.  He did it again for a third
time, at an even slower speed.  Same result.

"This guy must have screwed up the settings," the off-duty
officer thought.

A few weeks later, when he received the violations in the mail,
he discovered three traffic tickets:

Each for not wearing a seat belt!

Red Sox Game Reminder

*Reminder* Friday 7/11 Red Sox game vs. Baltimore.

We will be seated in section 37, in select seats between rows 17-19. I will hand out the tickets while you board the bus.

The bus will leave from *Kendall Lot* at 3:30pm. Game time is 7:05pm.

*There are no alcohol beverages allowed on the college bus.*

The bus will park near the ball park on Yawkey Way. Please feel free to leave anything on the bus while it is parked.

The bus will leave from the parking area a 1/2 hour after the game.

Smart Car

Its so tiny and cute, but is it safe? Does it save on fuel? Is it worth it?

According to the smart car website, the new technology is a crash box of sorts that creates a safety force field around the two passengers in the vehicle. It gives a feel of how" a nut is protected by its hard outside shell, the smart fortwo's occupants are protected by a steel housing that combines longitudinal and transverse members that displace impact forces over a large area of the car. So it's not about the amount of steel, but how that material will resist an impact. That's what the tridion safety cell is all about". The "shell" is made up from steel bars in the front and rear bumpers "that are bolted to the safety cell´s longitudinal beams via slip tubes" which help absorb any impact from minor parking lot bumps to major accidents.

With the push to own smaller cars with the ever so rising fuel costs, it does not appear that the smart car is better then a Honda or Toyota on gas mileage. The fuel efficiencies are relatively the same. The push for the smart car is safety. Te company did make a hybrid edition for the 2007 year models, but I believe that was a test of sorts to see if it would sell. No word if they will continue to make a hybrid series.

Maybe some day we will have one in the fleet?

No Swearing in MD

Keep in mind while traveling through Rockville, Maryland, that the streets there are rated G. If you possess a PG-17 vocabulary, take the bypass. Swearing from a vehicle in Rockville is considered a misdemeanor.

Dont' Talk & Drive

Massachusetts is in the process of putting a law through to ban talking/texting on your cell phone while you drive. But, while you are using a fleet vehicle you MAY NOT talk and drive no matter what the law states. If you are caught talking/texting while driving a college vehicle, you will lose your driving privileges.

If you want to check out the individual laws that are in your state so you know what is going on while you are in your personal vehicle, check out Cellphone Laws.

Just keep in mind, even though it may not be a law in your hometown, it is a distraction to talk or text while driving your vehicle. It can be a hazardous condition for those around you while you take your eyes off the road for a second. You never know what you could come across while driving without a sufficient reaction time or even if your car drifts into the on-coming traffic for a second, it can be disastrous.

No Burn-Outs in Kansas

In Derby, Kansas, it is considered a misdemeanor to screech your tires while driving. This abominable act can cost you 30 days in jail.

PVTA

If you need to get to any of the other 5-Colleges, use the PVTA (the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority) bus line. You can check the website to see the routes and times for the bus. The bus does not run during the summer and for some breaks.

They also post regional route maps so if you choose to use the bus to get to MHC for work, check out the website for further information.

The base fares are-

Adult $1.00 (.90 if purchased at the Customer Service Center)
Transfer .25 (regular & children)
Elderly (with valid PVTA ID) .50, transfer .10 (To receive reduce-fare privileges you must have a valid PVTA photo ID or statewide Access Pass. This ID is process while you wait at the Customer Service Center at 1341 Main St. Springfield)
Children under 6 years of age ride the PVTA for free
Children 6-12 years of age pay .75
Passengers 13 years of age and up pay the adult fare.

The fixed route fare-

31-Consecutive Day Passes

Regular 31-day, monthly cost $36.00
Elderly & Disabled 31-day, monthly cost $18.00
Regular 7-day cost $10.00
Regular day pass, cost $3.00

Fares for ADA & Senior Van Service-

$2.00 within an adjacent community.
$2.50 outside a non-adjacent community.
$3.00 out of county/non-adjacent communities

When boarding the bus you must have the exact fare. Operators do not carry change and are not allowed to search purses, pockets or backpacks for customer's fare.

How can I drive a fleet vehicle?

If you have always wanted to become a fleet certified driver, there are a few things you need to do first before driving the wonderful fleet vehicles.

Step-One
You must attend a fleet orientation class. These classes are set up when they are needed (for the summer, its only when requested, during the school year they are typically every two weeks). You must contact the fleet office (or coordinator) to sign up for a class. The classes usually run about an hour.

Step-Two
You must submit your driving history from your home state. You do not need this paperwork for the class, but if you already have it, you may become approved sooner. You can check with your home states website (or call) to see how to obtain the form.

Step-Three
Turn in all required paperwork for review.

When you have become approved, the Fleet Coordinator will send you an official email letting you know you are all set to drive.

Please keep in mind, annually all fleet drivers must submit a credential form to maintain the ability to drive. You will receive an email letting you know when this must be done.

Alaska's Bizare Law

Contrary to public opinion roof racks are not specifically designed for skis, snowboards and cocker spaniels. Or at least not in Alaska, where authorities have found it necessary to declare it illegal to tether a dog to the roof of a car.

California Bizare Driving Laws

No matter how luxuriously comfortable that divided highway may look, it is illegal in Eureka, California, to use a road as a bed.

In order to save money on having to crop dust their streets, officials in Chico, California, have made it illegal to plant rutabagas in roadways.

Officials in Glendale, California, no doubt, caved in to insurance lobbyists when they inexplicably decided to make it illegal to jump from a car at 65 mph.

Don’t expect to find any salt-rimmed curbs in Hermosa Beach, California. Officials there have made it illegal to spill your Margarita on any street.

Average Fuel Cost OUCH

This will allow you to compare the current day fuel cost along with yesterdays, a month ago and even a year ago cost. *CAUTION* this website may cause you to become nauseous (with the way the fuel costs continue to rise).

New Fleet?

Its the new Harley Davidson division of the Fleet Office? What do you think? Naa, its just two of the Public Safety Officers showing off their bikes. Officer Wojcik is on the red bike & Officer Ayers is on the other. Nice bikes though!

Hybrid Buses

Wow! Can you believe it? Larger cities like Honolulu are incorporating Hybrid buses into their fleets. It will be some time before MHC will be able to afford this type of vehicle, since the latest one that Honolulu mass transit purchased was over $200,000 back in 2004.

The buses are also 75-passenger capacity. Holy cow! I bet that would be wonderful for our bus trips to NYC and to see the Red Sox!

Along with fuel costs and larger seating capacity's, the hybrid buses are said to have better brake life, provide a smoother ride, are quieter and release less emissions into the environment. All great perks for a hybrid bus. It helps everyone on all aspects!

Also, while visiting NYC in the past I have seen hybrid buses in their mass transit fleet as well. I'm sure there are other cities out there taking action too and its great! It good to know that the larger city's are taking the environmental issues we all face into consideration.

Fuel Saving Tips

With the fuel prices out of control these days, everyone is looking into saving as much money as they can at the pump (or other places so they can purchase the fuel). I guess the easiest way would be not to drive your car and use the gas, but how many of us can do that? Not many at that and it doesn't matter if you are a student or employee, the cost of fuel effects us all in so many ways.

With that in mind, here are some fuel saving tips that can help get you that extra mile -

Observe the speed limit - of course you should be doing this to begin with (definitely in a fleet car), but if you tend to have a slight lead food in your personal car, you may want to drive the speed limit to help conserve fuel. According to fueleconomy.gov, "While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of speeds), gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph".
Remove Excess Weight - avoid storing heavy items in your vehicle for a long period of time, especially things over 100 pounds. The extra weight could reduce your MPG by 2%.
Avoid Excessive Idling - this is especially in a fleet vehicle, but even in your personal vehicle try to avoid idling.
Use Cruise Control - in many vehicles, this will assist with saving fuel since your foot isn't always pressed on the gas petal. Its also a bonus since you will remain at a constant speed so you don't go over the speed limit & now you are using two steps to conserve fuel.
Keep your car in shape - the fleet vehicles are regularly checked by the college's mechanic but on your personal vehicle make sure your tires are properly inflated, your engine is properly tuned (not to a radio station mind you!), check your air filter regularly and use only recommended oil grades for your vehicle.

These are just a few simple steps to assist you & your wallet in these times of ever changing fuel prices. Good luck!

SUV Hybrids

Vehicle companies have brainstormed ideas on how to make them better for the environment and easier on the consumer wallet with the ever rising fuel costs.

Check out the following article, Big SUV's Drink Less, on how GMC has created an innovative hybrid system in their full-size pickups and SUV vehicles.

Let me know what you think! Will this new technology work? Should they be used on other hybrid vehicles, like sedans and mini-vans? Will this help the consumer with the cost of gas now rather then wait several years to pay for itself in savings?

The Big Apple

College Employees hit the town on Sat 5/17/2008 to check out Manhattan. It was a glorious day, the sun was shinning, a slight breeze in the sky which helped carry the smells of the city to heighten your senses to remind you that you are in NYC baby!

National Invitational Regatta

This past weekend was the last regatta for the crew members for the season and the very last one for the Seniors. The team had a great season, great job ladies! The regatta was held in Quinsigamond, Worcester. It was for the Eastern College Conference.

How do I get there?

If you are headed off somewhere & don't know how to get there, we recommend using Google Maps. There are many websites out there, but we have found personally in the Fleet Office that Google Maps gives better directions then Mapquest.

Our bus drivers who do not have their own GPS unit request maps off of Google rather then Mapquest. Also on Google, you may print a overhead map so you can see the area as well as your directions.

Fleet Driving in the Summer

OMG! There are no more classes! Exams start Friday! Graduation in a few weeks! And then......what?

So, with those of you who will be on campus over the summer and will be conducting research you may still use a fleet vehicle to get from point A to point B. Yes, the fleet vehicle must be used for college business (unless its the LyonShare), but at least you won't have to buy a car or beg your parents to use thiers. The vehicle has to be used under a department since student orgs cannot use fleet vehicles over the summer.

If you want to just relax this summer, but you are still on campus, feel free to use the LyonShare vehicle to get you there. Use it to go to the Beach, go shopping, go to Mystic for the day or what ever your little heart desires! Its here and available, so please use it!

Also, in the past Student Programs has needed a fleet certified drivers to help shuttle students to Big Y and other places over the summer. So, don't let your talents go to waste and check with them to see if you can earn a few extra dollars and help out your fellow students.

Howe Caverns

The Geology Department went on a great field trip over the weekend to the Howe Caverns in NY. They originally were schedule to go in February, but that pesky snow storm got in the way of their plans. So, the trip was able to go without any weather hitches this past weekend.

It looks like the group had a wonderful time and learned hands-on at the same time.

Ride Van News

Starting for Fall 2008, there will be a Ride Van back in service. Yeah!

This will be a test run of sorts for the new academic year for 2008-2009. The Ride Van/Safe Ride was running several years ago as an on campus shuttle service for students, but was canceled due to budget cuts.

Recently, a proposal was brought up to re-instate this shuttle service for next school year. After many meetings and adjusting proposals, the Ride Van service is back.

The service will be on a loop system around campus. The map will be posted as soon as its available. It will run from 10pm-2am, 7 days a week except over breaks. It will however run during J-Term.

Public Safety's Elizabeth Cahn says "She is very excited that we got this far and I hope that we can get a lot of student support next year in terms of riders so that if can continue". Elizabeth is PS's Planning & Community Outreach Coordinator & a huge contributor in getting the Ride Van back in play for the student community. Thanks Elizabeth!

So, next fall keep an eye out for information on schedules and stops.

Cugnot used a steam engine to power his vehicle, built under his instructions at the Paris Arsenal by mechanic Brezin. It was used by the French Army to haul artillery at a whopping speed of 2 1/2 mph on only three wheels. The vehicle had to stop every ten to fifteen minutes to build up steam power. The steam engine and boiler were separate from the rest of the vehicle and placed in the front (see engraving above). The following year (1770), Cugnot built a steam-powered tricycle that carried four passengers.

n 1771, Cugnot drove one of his road vehicles into a stone wall, making Cugnot the first person to get into a motor vehicle accident. This was the beginning of bad luck for the inventor. After one of Cugnot's patrons died and the other was exiled, the money for Cugnot's road vehicle experiments ended.

Steam engines powered cars by burning fuel that heated water in a boiler, creating steam that expanded and pushed pistons that turned the crankshaft, which then turned the wheels. During the early history of self-propelled vehicles - both road and railroad vehicles were being developed with steam engines. (Cugnot also designed two steam locomotives with engines that never worked well.) Steam engines added so much weight to a vehicle that they proved a poor design for road vehicles; however, steam engines were very successfully used in locomotives. Historians, who accept that early steam-powered road vehicles were automobiles, feel that Nicolas Cugnot was the inventor of the first automobile.

Bus Trip Updates

All three Red Sox games are sold out. The Sunday 8/17 game sold out in record time. The announcements went out on Monday morning by flyer, email & the gateway announcement web page. By 2pm on Monday, that game was sold out.

The other two games sold out this morning, around 10:30am. WOW!

The Red Sox ticket agency only allowed group coordinators to purchase up to three games. We maxed out on the amount of games we could purchase to maximize the employees chances of getting tickets. This is why we do not have more then three games.

For future games, if you would like to be contacted directly, please let me know. I have a growing list of people who would like to be notified by email rather then waiting for the flyers to arrive in their department.

The email notification would work for all bus trips, not just for the Red Sox games.

As for the NYC bus trip May 17th, there are still a few seats available. This may be the last time this trip will be for $20 round trip "ticket" to NYC. Since the ever growing fuel cost is effecting everything, included our fuel, we may increase the cost to cover the expenses. So, take advantage of the low fair before its too late.

Aloha Relays

The college's track team went away this past weekend to compete in the Aloha Relays at Bowdin College in ME. I heard they had a wonderful time, ate at a fun restaurant (that's how they got their hands on a sombrero) and enjoyed the Hawaiian themed races.

No More 15-Passenger Vans

A few years ago, the college decided that the 15-Passenger vans were no longer safe for our students and employees to use. As time went by and it was time to replace these vehicles, they were replaced with 12-passenger vans. You may see one here and there on campus as a facilities van for equipment, but not as a passenger van.

The reason the college does not want these vehicles as a passenger van any longer is "according to auto safety experts, is the design, the weight and balance of the van. On most models, the car manufacturers have used the same wheel base. But you can see on the 15-passenger model, the back end has been extended. That means when it's fully loaded, there's a seat with four passengers behind the rear axle. That tends to make the back end heavy, so that when there's a sudden swerve, the rear end swings out. The second, critical issue is that the van is top heavy."

Also, this includes rental vehicles. Do not rent a 15-passenger van for college events. We want to make sure everyone is safe, no matter who the vehicle belongs too!

Fleet Driver of the Month

The Fleet Office would like to start recognizing students and employees who love our vehicles and treat the program with respect. Oh, how we appreciate it and we want to show it!

For the month of April, we would like to introduce you to our first LyonShare vehicle program user and a well respected student in our department, Stephanie '08. She has been a member of the fleet program since the winter of 2004.

This past fall the college wanted to introduce a new program and boy was I nervous about having a new section of the fleet office (it was the first time we had a credit card machine in the office for the fees of the LS vehicle and boy was that intimidating at first). Stephanie was lucky enough to make the maiden voyage of this new program and she felt confident that this would be a great addition to the fleet program.

Stephanie helped us work out some kinks in the program, yeah with that darn credit card machine. She was patient and kind during the learning phase and we really appreciated it!

She now uses the LyonShare vehicle often and it has helped her with many tasks. She says "I'm so glad that MHC has decided to offer the Lyon's Share vehicle. I used it even before classes started this year. I used the Pack and Hold service at Bed and Bath, and I knew I would need some way to get my boxes back on campus to furnish my room. Amanda was such a help in getting me squared away to rent the car! Thanks Amanda!"

So, thanks Stephanie for your kind words and big smile that warms the office when you pick up your paperwork. Good luck after graduation!

This week is CAUSE Hunger Awareness Week.

The Student Organization is collecting nutritious non-perishable food items such as Soups, Peanut Butter, Cereal, Tuna and Pasta.

Drop off items at the Eliot House Lobby.

The donated items will be delivered to local food banks.

If each of our Faculty/Staff gave one item, they would collect 1,144 items to share with local hungry families!

The fleet program is in charge for more then "fleet vehicles". The fleet office orders, handles administrative paperwork for new vehicles and register all campus owned/leased vehicles .

Also, equipment that can be driven across (by driving) town streets has to be registered, so the fleet office also handles this task. This includes the John Deere Gators, High-Lifts or any other type of equipment you can think of.

Are Hybrid Vehicles Dangerous?

According to NPR and Yahoo (and may other sources), there have been reports that silent Hybrid vehicles could cause havoc on persons who are blind since they rely on their hearing for so much. So, please keep this in mind while you are using one of our fleet sedans and approach an intersection or other locations that pedestrians are present.

Listed below is one of the many articles I found while researching this concern. It was found on NPR.com.

Nearly Silent Hybrid Cars May Endanger the Blind

Hybrid vehicles may pose a deadly threat to people who rely on their hearing to navigate streets and crosswalks. The National Federation of the Blind is calling for hybrid manufacturers to make their cars sound like traditional car engines, so that blind people can hear them coming.

Robert Siegel talks to Dr. Fredric Schroeder, first vice president of the National Federation of the Blind.

We confirmed the comparative noise levels of hybrid and gas-powered cars, using a Toyota Prius — one of the more popular models. Toyota officials say they are studying the issue; they also note that on the opposite side of the issue are advocates of reduced noise pollution.

The Toyota officials say that the quieter cars has led them to advise drivers and pedestrians to exercise increased caution.

The shuttle is to help ease the burden of trying to find a ride to the locations in Holyoke and South Hadley, since they are not on the PVTA bus loop. Please take advantage of this shuttle! The drivers are wonderful and appreciate the business.

The van leaves from the Blanchard PVTA bus stop and will take you to your destination. Please have the location name and address if you are going for the first time since your location may be a new destination for the shuttle.

What is the LyonShare?

The LyonShare project is a new addition to the fleet program this academic year. It is modeled around the popular Zip Car rental program.

The college purchased a new 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid in addition to the normal fleet vehicles.

The LyonShare is to be used almost like a rental car. But keep in mind that the rules & regulations are formatted from the fleet program, for instance, you may only travel up to 500 miles away from campus and if there is damage to the vehicle, you must report it immediately. The things that make the new program different is the vehicle can be used for personal use, individual use and for a fee.

So, if you want to go to the mall and complete your sister's birthday shopping....go ahead.
If you need to get to a doctor's appointment and your car is in the shop....go ahead.
If you want to pick up a friend at the airport and you don't have a car on campus....go ahead.

What is needed to be able to participate in the LyonShare program is:
Become a fleet certified driver
A credit card/debit card (Visa or MasterCard)
Fill out the application for the program
Pay for application fee ($25.00)
Pay for the annual fee ($50.00)

After the criteria is met, you are all set to make your reservation!

The fee's to use the vehicle are:
Hourly Rate $7.00
Daily Rate $55.00

So go ahead, give us a call (or email) for use of our new LyonShare vehicle! We look forward to hearing from you!

How Doug Became a MHC Bus Driver

Doug’s Philosophy of Driving for Mount Holyoke College

“I did a calculation once while I was in the tour bus industry and it indicated that if a driver were to drive a tour bus for 30 years, then that driver would come in contact with a quarter of a million (250,000) people. When you think about that, well, what an opportunity to touch that many people in a positive way and how many people in this world have that kind of opportunity?”

“I drive primarily for the athletic teams on campus and of course my primary responsibility is to provide safe travel for our teams and coaches. To me, however, there is more than just driving the teams to and from colleges. I treat all of the athletes as if they were my own daughters. They are very precious people and I treat them that way. I am interested in their competitions, their aspirations, their studies, and their outlook on life. I greet them with a smile and kind words and offer a lot of encouragement. They inspire me with their strong work ethic and sacrifice and their desire to represent Mount Holyoke College and the Athletic Program in a very positive way. I look forward everyday to my next opportunity to be with them and their excellent coaches and staff. It’s as if I am part of the team and I enjoy that immensely.”

“The teams I have had the opportunity to drive for and have come to know in this way are the following: Crew, Cross Country, Track & Field, Swimming, Soccer, Riding, Tennis, and Volleyball.”

The Impressions of a Young Boy

Doug has always wanted to drive a “Greyhound” type bus since he was 10 years old. He can remember riding on a 1955 Scenicruiser Greyhound bus that had 2 floors on it (see picture below). He would travel with his mother and father and his younger brother from Boston, MA to Scranton, Pennsylvania to see his grandmother and grandfather Cunningham. His grandfather was a coal miner in that area for 50 years and Doug and his family lived in Medford, MA so whenever they could, they would travel to Scranton by bus and later on in a car to see them.

Anyway, the Scenicruiser had 10 seats on the lower level and an additional 33 seats on the second floor. You can see in the picture below that there is a windshield on the second floor which allows the passengers in the first row of seats to see over the blue roof below allowing for a beautiful view of the bus going down the highway and pulling into the bus slots between other buses at the Greyhound stations. Doug would not sit down but instead would stand up and enjoy the view all the way from Boston to Scranton. This excited Doug so much that he wanted to grow up to be a Greyhound bus driver. It didn’t happen right away, however, in fact it took 44 years before his dream came true.

The Responsibilities of a Young Man

After graduating from high school he joined the U.S. Air Force because he was influenced by President Kennedy’s famous quote which was “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country!” During his first few weeks of Air Force basic training, the Gulf of Tonkin incident took place in Vietnam which started a huge buildup of troops in Vietnam. After serving his 4 years, and the war still going on, he re-enlisted for another 4 years serving 8 years total from 1964 to 1972. Although he never went to Vietnam, he felt strongly that he should remain in the Air Force during that period of time.

The Beginning of His Career and the Path Towards Mount Holyoke College

After his discharge from the Air Force Doug started his career as a Logistics Administrative manager at Honeywell in Lexington, MA and then continued on with his career taking advantage of opportunities at Raytheon, Federal Express (now called FedX,), 3 computer companies (Cambex, Intertel, and IPL Systems, all along the 128 corridor in the Waltham/Burlington/Lexington area of Massachusetts). He attended night school for 5 years at Massachusetts Bay Community College in Wellesley, MA studying Business Administration while maintaining his employment.

Since layoffs were common in high tech companies in the 70’s and 80’s, he saw that people were getting their pink slips and eventually Doug got one. Being a family man with a wife and 3 children Doug decided to take the opportunity to get his tractor trailer commercial driver’s license to put food on the table between jobs in the computer industry. He realized that if he had his Commercial Driver’s License that he could find work just about anywhere.

After graduating from Allied Tractor Trailer School in Walpole, MA he decided this type of work would be a pleasant change from the corporate world he was used to so he applied for a tractor trailer job at a big construction firm in Andover, MA. When the owner of the company read his resume he was convinced that Doug would be more beneficial to his company if he would become his Office Manager and run the day to day operations instead of driving one of his dump trailers. Doug did drive a dump trailer for about a month as well as getting experience in all aspects of the business. The owner wanted Doug to learn the business and also gain the respect of the workers before he took over the office job. Doug spent 10 years there and the only reason he left was because of a change in management and the death of his wife Janet.

Eventually, by chance, he met a woman named Joanne from Hadley who lost her husband and was left with 3 children, 7, 12, and 16. Eventually he sold his house in Billerica, MA and moved out here to find work and also to marry Joanne.

One day he took a tour bus from Hadley to Worcester to watch the Hadley basketball team compete for the Division III State Title. Doug had not been on a tour bus since he was 10 years old and it brought back pleasant memories for him being with his Mom and Dad traveling to Scranton, PA in that Scenicruiser. Doug was very much impressed with the tour bus and the driver. Since Doug and his wife sat up front near the driver, a conversation with the driver led Doug on his new path in life.

Finally The Opportunity to Drive A Tour Bus

“In 1999, Doug decided to enroll in Motor Coach Driving School at Peter Pan Bus Lines in Springfield, MA. Upon graduation he had an opportunity to drive a tour bus for Morgan Coach Lines in South Deerfield, MA. After driving for a year or so he was offered a job within the company as the Charter Sales Manager. He continued to drive when he could but his main responsibility was now with his new administrative job in the office. The company went out of business in 2005 and Doug found himself out of work along with a lot of other people.

There was a part time driver for Morgan Coach Lines named Tom who also worked as a Public Safety Officer and motor coach driver for Mount Holyoke College. Tom became aware of Doug’s situation and he thought that Doug would be a good candidate for driving the buses here at Mount Holyoke College as well as becoming a Public Safety Dispatcher. The college was looking to hire such a person in 2005 and Doug was eventually hired in February of 2006.”

Doug is very appreciative to Officer Tom for giving him the opportunity to achieve his long time dream to drive a “Greyhound-type” bus for a wonderful community of people here at Mount Holyoke College.

Doug is also a dispatcher for Public Safety when he is not driving our buses.

A group of vessels or vehicles, such as taxicabs or fishing boats, owned or operated as a unit.

Here at MHC, the Fleet Office is just like the #2 in the definition (excluding the taxicabs, vessels and fishing boats). The Office represents a group of vehicles that are available for the college community, either by reservations, rental or professionally driven reservations.

Our Fleet is made up of 3 sedans,1 rental sedan, 2 mini-vans, 2 12-passenger vans, 2 mini-buses and one large bus.

The vehicles (excluding the buses of course) are available for use after a fleet orientation class is completed. Along with the orientation class, a copy of your driving history is needed with your application. There are more steps for the college's rental vehicle, but we will get to that information soon.
